All NYC schools need to implement social-emotional learning – The Ticker

The New York Department of Education has launched the Strong Resilient NYC, a program that helps teachers understand the social and emotional needs of students during the 2021-2022 academic year. This effort for socio-emotional learning allows students to prioritize their mental health and should be in all New York schools.

Strong Resilient NYC was a partnership between the DOE and the Urban Assembly, a school support agency whose goal is to improve people’s education. The program uses a portal of sustainable city council scholars, a guided program, and DESSA, a questionnaire that asks teachers and students about a student’s social and emotional well-being.

According to the DOE, teachers reduce the use of traditional punishments, such as detention, and instead resolve conflicts by identifying emotions, resolving conflict, and resolving problems. Administrators of grades 3K-5 also receive training and materials to carry out activities that teach children how to communicate with others.
