Kelly Casa offers a wide selection of melon ceramics to paint for customers in the historic town of New Brownfields, whether for a celebration, date night or afternoon.

The Sandy Kirkwood owner opened the first ceramic painting studio in San Antonio in 2001 but sold it in early 2020. In 2014, she bought Casa, a village in New Brownfields.

“It was started in 2004 by a friend of mine,” said Kirkwood. “I heard he was going to sell it, so I called her and wished her success [asked]’Do you want to buy?’

The head of the village casa chooses to paint from a variety of sculptures, pottery, ornaments and other utensils as they like. In addition, music can be made with pieces of glass, tiles and stones.

“One thing about ceramics, they’ve been around for thousands of years,” Kirkwood said. “I think that’s one of the things that made me want to do that. There were so many options.”

Around 60 colors of non-toxic paint are also available to choose from. Kirkwood said the paint is also easy to remove if it comes on clothing or leather.

“When it dries, it flags properly, which makes it really great for kids, if people are afraid of it,” said Kirkwood.

Pieces range in price from 10- $ 120 and have everything you need. Online orders can also be painted at home and returned to the store for glazing and shooting in one of the stores.

Although Kirkwood said walk-ins are a big part of her business, she offers reservations over the weekend to secure a place on a busy night.

Group reservations can be for birthdays, parties or other events. Village Casa is also famous for its date nights and anniversaries, Kirkwood said. Art studio hosts can also bring their own food and beverages to fuel their artistic fire.

Kirkwood said Village Casa provides a relaxed atmosphere for new customers and regulars.

“We’ve got really good friends with a lot of people,” she said. “People feel at home.”
