Borussia Monchengladbach coach Oliver Neuville appears to have admitted that Antonio Conte is a long-time admirer of Tottenham Hotspur target Marcus Thuram with his Inter Milan side targeting the striker ‘two years ago’, speaking to Radio Sportiva.
The battle for one of Europe’s hottest strikers is only just beginning. Expect plenty of drama along the way, with Thuram’s rapidly expiring contract having the same effect as a drop of blood in a shark-infested ocean. Here come the predators, flapping their fins in a furious feeding frenzy.
You’d probably need three hands to count the total number of clubs who have been linked with the silky France international over the last few weeks. Tottenham are just one of them; The Sun and 90Min claiming that the son of Les Bleus legend Lillian Thuram is being watched closely by a side who seem totally incapable of finding any shred of competition for the talismanic Harry Kane.
Thuram Jr certainly has the ability to succeed where the likes of Fernando Llorente and Carlos Vinicius, to varying degrees, failed. He has 13 goals in 17 games this season. He’s been nigh-on unplayable throughout most of 2022/23 as well; running rings around Bundesliga defenders while reminding everyone why Arsene Wenger once compared him to a young Thierry Henry.
Wolfsburg sporting director Marcel Schafer even labeled Thuram a ‘world-class’ talent after one particularly well taken strike at the Volkswagen Arena a couple of weeks ago.
Antonio Conte could sign Marcus Thuram for Tottenham after targeting him at Inter Milan.
And this is not the first time the 25-year-old has been a target for a club with Antonio Conte in the driving seat.
“Inter (Milan) already wanted him two years ago,” says former Germany international Neuville, assistant coach to Daniel Farke at Borussia Park.
Conte, of course, was still at the helm of Inter back in 2020. Whether or not Thuram was actually a Conte target, or instead a player headhunted by sporting director Piero Ausilio, well we can only hypotethise.
But the fact that Conte’s Spurs are now looking closely a player his Inter side wanted during a previous transfer window certainly doesn’t feel like a mere coincidence.
“He’s having an amazing season. It’s difficult for him to stay,” Neuville adds of Thuram, reportedly available for a bargain £10 million in January.
“If he continues to score so many goals, it’s certain he’ll have many offers from Italy, Spain and England.
“We must be a little realistic. I hope he will still be here for a long time in Monchengladbach. But now he’s been called up by French for the World Cup, it will be difficult for him to extend.
“I hope (he stays). But the chances are slim.”
