Social Democrats TD for Wicklow, Jennifer Whitmore, hosted a group of pupils from Carysfort National School in Arklow at Leinster House this week.
he pupils from fifth and sixth class, along with their teachers Mrs Craine and Mrs Bailey, were well-prepared for the visit, having done their research on the Oireachtas website and prepared lots of questions to ask the Deputy.
On their arrival at Leinster House they were taken for a tour of the houses, which included a visit to the Dáil Chamber and the Seanad by the ushers, before they met with Deputy Whitmore for a question and answer session in the AV room.
“I was delighted to have the opportunity to host Carysfort National School from Arklow at Leinster House,” Deputy Whitmore said. As one of the smaller schools in Arklow, it really is lovely to see so many young faces paying an interest in their communities and local politics.
“Politics needs to be for everyone and its something that young people should feel empowered to engage with. For too long politics has been out of reach of young people and it’s encouraging to see the interest of the students of Carysfort in local issues.
“If any other Wicklow schools are interested in coming up to Leinster House for a tour and a question-and-answer session, I’d be more than happy to facilitate them.
