“Our school for nurses is a big point of pride for our community,” Thomas said. “We are pleased that by providing accommodations to students and the education staff dedicated to the school only, we are emphasizing our commitment to education and building a workforce of the health professions in our area.”
“Nursing serves as the key foundation for health systems and is fundamental to providing access to high-quality care,” said Janet Tomcabge, vice president and chief nursing director of Geisinger. “The shortage of nursing is well known, and with today’s announcement, we emphasize our continued commitment to offering a track to the profession through a program that is regularly recognized due to its high quality.”
According to its interim principal, Beth Pinkbiner, MSN, RN, the school accepts up to 35 students a year for the two-year full-time program. The high-ranked RN program, thanks to the high transition rate, graduates benefit from the National Licensing Council examination. “We are proud of our program and our students,” she said. “Now, we are excited to create a real campus feel for our learners and enhance services in a space that provides optimal educational experiences, as well as faculty and administration offices.”
Thomas said that in addition to his nursing school, Geisinger is investing in the future of health services in its western area with a dedicated campus within Geisinger Louistown Hospital and Geisinger State College Medical School for medical students enrolled at Geisner Commonwealth Medical School. To be officially launched in June.
The western region is also home to three master’s degree programs in medical education:
• Family medicine at Geisinger Hospital in Houston
• Geisinger Pharmacy Louistown
• Geisinger Pharmacy Clinics (West), State College
