GNH rolls past St. Paul and into Class SS playoffs.

WINSTED – Call it a Gilbert/Northwestern/Housatonic Thanksgiving feast in Thursday morning’s 56-6 Yellowjacket romp over a young St. Paul Catholic team at The Gilbert School’s Van Why Field.

Freddie Camp served much of the dinner with six touchdowns — three rushing, two passing from quarterback Nolan Risedorf and a 98-yard interception return — leaving the GNH star just 22 yards short of 1,000 rushing yards for the year with seven carries for 167 yards.

“Today, I just got the ball before the other guys,” Camp grinned after racing 39 yards on the Yellowjackets’ second play from scrimmage, then staking GNH to a 21-0 first-quarter lead on a 22-yard pass from Risedorf and 58 more scoring yards before the second.

Camp spoiled any Falcon second period hopes early, picking off a pass near the GNH end zone from sophomore St. Paul quarterback Brady Mcmanama and racing it back 98 yards to the other end.

Aiden Avenia got in on the second-quarter Yellowjacket spree with a four-yard drive completion, then Camp sprang loose again for 40 more yards.

“We have a lot more weapons,” said GNH coach Scott Salius. “Today, things just fell into place for Freddie.”

Including one more long pass (32 yards) from Risedorf early in the third quarter, finding Camp standing alone in the end zone.

Falcon freshman Ryan Diaz got St. Paul on the scoreboard with a one-yard plunge early in the final period.

GNH’s Divita family celebrated with the final score, a four-yard pass from freshman quarterback Ty Divita to senior tight end brother Devin Divita with time running out.

Kicker Daryl Sharack was a perfect 8-for-8 on point-after kicks.

Still, the GNH appetite was far from satisfied.

The win cemented the Yellowjackets’ spot in the Class SS playoff beginning next Tuesday, putting them unofficially in the seventh seed in the eight-team division, ready to travel to No. 2 Windham for the quarterfinal round.

“Last year, we ran into (Class M champion) Killingly in the quarterfinals,” said Coach Salius. “This year, we’d like to make it to another round with a chance to win it all.”

After all, it’s a perfect time of year for good football teams to get greedy.
