Is M Night Shyamalan’s Knock at the Cabin based on a book?

Say what you will about M Night Shyamalan. Love his work, hate his work, it may not even matter. His projects will attract intrigue all the same.

The 52-year-old American filmmaker is best known for such early movies as The Sixth Sense, Unbreakableand Signs. However, he’s since grown to become one of the most divisive mainstream directors working today.

Efforts like Village split viewers down the middle and titles like After Earth and The Last Airbender received waves of criticism. More recently, on the other hand, some considered Old a return to form and his latest project has finally received a trailer.

Is Knock at the Cabin based on a book?

Yes, Knock at the Cabin is based on Paul G Tremblay’s 2018 horror novel The Cabin at the End of the World.

Knock at the Cabin marks the first time that the American author’s work has been adapted; his other books include A Head Full of Ghosts, Disappearance at Devil’s Rockand Survivor Song.

Collider reports that M Night began shooting the movie in April 2022 and shared a post about his experience after one week. He called it a “very dark, emotional film. One take shook me up so much I had to walk away to collect myself. Hopefully you’ll feel it as well when you guys see it.”

The Cabin at the End of the World tells the tale of Andrew and Eric, a couple who take their adopted daughter Wen on vacation to a secluded cabin in New Hampshire. However, four strangers hold them hostage, telling the family that they’re there to prevent the apocalypse. A mysterious first trailer presents audiences with the very same premise.

You can purchase the book on Kindle or a physical copy (on marketplace at the moment) on Amazon.

‘A reaction to the home invasion film subgenre’

Paul previously spoke with CNBC about the process of his novel being translated to screen and was asked how it feels for it to become Shyamalan’s vision:

“I’ve always been fascinated by influence and the retelling of tales, particularly within the horror genre… The Cabin at the End of the World is itself a reaction to the home invasion film subgenre. Most of me is excited and intrigued at the prospect of seeing my story reimagined or refracted on screen.”

He continued: “But I’d be lying if I said I was egoless about the whole experience. This novel means a great deal to me. I lived inside the book for the year and a half I wrote it. Any story and character changes will be something I’ll have to deal with…”
