Netherlands vs. Ecuador live updates: Cody Gakpo goal puts Dutch in front early

Gakpo’s growing pains

If you look at Gakpo when he plays out wide (he’s through the middle for the Netherlands today), he has an unusually big frame for a winger.

This piece tells the story of the growing pains he experience and how, as a younger man, he had to cope with major physical changes to his body.

It’s worth getting to know Gakpo because he’s going to be around on the biggest stage for a long time.

GOAL! Netherlands 1 Ecuador 0

5: Gakpo, again…

This really is turning into a breakout tournament for Gakpo. The PSV Eindhoven star has been burning it up on the domestic stage, with goals and assists coming out of his ears, but having earned the Dutch a late win over Senegal, he’s stepped up with a brilliant finish after just five minutes.

All he needed was a little space on the edge of the box to step onto his left foot and lash in a sensational hit. A goal of very high quality.

The Netherlands lead.

Sore one for Preciado

4: Hmm. That’s a dull one for Ángelo Preciado, right where it, er, hurts. Accidental and he’ll be fine, obviously, but you really don’t love to see that.

Caicedo and Mendez on yellow card tightrope

Of sorts, anyway. The Ecuador pair will miss the last group game if they pick up a booking in this match. So they need to be careful because the final fixture, against Senegal, could have so much riding on it.

Kick off! Netherlands 0 Ecuador 0

I had control of the blog for Mexico v Poland earlier this week and honestly, we were clinging to Lewandowski’s penalty miss for prime action in that one.

Let’s hope for much better here. Ecuador have kicked off and we’re underway at Khalifa International Stadium…

National anthems underway

The teams are out and lined up for the anthems. We’ve had some very passionate renditions at this World Cup. Holland not really giving it laldy, as we say in Scotland, but Ecuador are getting stuck in big time. You love to see it.

Kick off on the way…

Van Gaal’s cuddly side

Louis van Gaal is renowned as an uncompromising coach, one you wouldn’t want to cross, but this was a gentle moment from a press conference of his earlier this week, when a young football writer took the opportunity to tell van Gaal how much he admired him.

Qatar about to crash out

You might have seen Qatar losing 3-1 to Senegal today. The hosts have looked badly out of their depth in the main and the only way they stay in the tournament is if Ecuador find a way to beat Holland. Even then, it’s most likely all over for them.

This was our full-time report from Senegal’s win:

They may not always qualify, but when they get there, the Netherlands generally mean business.

Something special on the Ecuador bench?

Our friends from the Newell’s Old Boys English Twitter account (disclosure – Jamie Ralph who runs the account helped me with a book about Marcelo Bielsa) have asked us to highlight Newell’s 23-year-old forward Djorkaeff Reasco.

How’s this for a hit?? Quite a name too – and yes, he is named after You Know Who.

20 years since Ecuador’s World Cup debut

They’ve never made it past the round of 16, which they did in 2006, before being knocked out by England and a David Beckham free-kick.

How nice are these kits??

Some real vibrancy today

Two of the brighter colors here. My girlfriend doesn’t like it if I wear either yellow or orange. She says it clashes with my hair. Good thing I’m not at this match in person.

Ecuador also have one of the better anthems at the tournament, while the Netherlands disappoint. Some cracking atmosphere in score. Read the full breakdown below…

And here’s the Netherlands XI!

Everton legend Davy Klaassen starts ahead of Vincent Janssen, with Bergwijn and Gakpo starting in a two up front. Jurrien Timber starts in place of Matthijs de Ligt.

Very strange mix of youth and experience in this team.

Ecuador team out!

Enner Valencia passed fit after struggling for fitness in the opener – despite scoring two goals.

Troyes’ Jackson Porozo replaces Romario Ibarra at centre-back.

Can the Netherlands qualify today?

Yes – if they win! They’ll be on six points, while Ecuador and Senegal will both on three. Pointless Qatar cannot qualify.

This is because Ecuador and Senegal play on the final weekend, and therefore both cannot get either maximum points or zero points.

The Netherlands cannot guarantee being group winners, however.

The Netherlands looked flat in their last game but Cody Gakpo was special.

And Phil Hay was not the only member of The Athletic’s staff to write about Gakpo after the Netherlands’ win earlier this week.

Nick Miller also waxed lyrical about the forward.

Nick made it clear that Cody Gakpo’s stock was already high coming into Qatar 2022. He is a fixture of the transfer-gossip columns; and he’s been the leading scorer and creator in the Eredivisie this season, where he is the driving force behind PSV Eindhoven’s participation in what looks like a genuine three-horse title race.

And now Nick thinks he looks like he’ll be the driving force behind the Netherlands’ World Cup campaign too.

Want to know more about Gakpo?

There is a certain category of footballer in Europe which major clubs love to pore over: players who are precocious, loaded with potential and some way short of their peak. They are ripe for development and, if all goes to plan, they can offer terrific resale value further down the line.

Gakpo fits that mold perfectly and the high expectations around him were responsible for the late scramble for his signature at the end of the transfer window in August. Leeds United flew their director of football, Victor Orta, to the Netherlands to try to land the winger on the day before the deadline and several other Premier League clubs took a close look at him, Manchester United and Southampton included.

PSV Eindhoven held firm, though, and refused to sell him, partly because they were unsatisfied with the offers they received but also because they could see that another strong domestic season in the Eredivisie combined with a good performance for the Netherlands at the World Cup would. send Gakpo’s value rocketing.

Find out more about him below.

Leeds United, Southampton and the ‘hectic’ chase for Cody Gakpo

November 25, 2022 at 8:59 AM EST

Will Cody Gakpo take center stage again?

Cody Gakpo came up with the goods when the Netherlands were in need of a goal during their opener with Senegal.

The PSV Eindhoven forward, who was heavily linked with a summer move to Manchester United, netted in the 84th minute when he latched on to a Frenkie de Jong cross to score with his head.

Gakpo, who has now scored four goals in 10 appearances for his country, came into the tournament having scored 13 goals in 24 appearances for his club this season.

He has been piling up goals and assists this season and he is almost the perfect wide forward, blessed with pace but also benefiting from a tall and powerful physique that makes him difficult to defend against.

Will he take center stage again against the hosts?
