ST. CLAIRSVILLE – Nursing students at East Ohio University study in an environment that is close to reality that can be imitated in a lab and prepares them to respond to emergencies.

Until Friday, the nursing program simulation lab will be officially operational.

Matt Fox, assistant director of nursing, said the lab was designed in six months and built in about a year. The investment was about $ 250,000.

“Students, they were in this lab this week, and in this room they did a high-quality simulation.” he said. “Placement of students in real clinical practice without real patient care.”

Fox said there are about 10 nursing students in a medium group.

“In the future, we plan to expand the number of students and groups, and we’re looking for a target of about 25 to 30.” he said. “We will offer an obstetrics course in the fall to expand the birth simulator.”

The central part of the equipment is a high-quality simulator mannequin that is able to speak, cry and shout. It can also mimic heart rate, pulse and other functions.

Fox said there are two rooms, one with a female simulator mannequin.

The birth simulator calls for the addition of a mannequin that can mimic a birth.

Fox said the students are doing well.

“We can put the‘ patient ’into experiences that they don’t always encounter in a clinical setting as a nursing student. It gives them practice. For example, a cardiac arrest patient, a respiratory arrest patient, someone who comes in with a bleeding after a traumatic accident, and they can handle it with this lab environment. ”

Students enter a simulation lab who don’t know what they are responding to. It’s up to them to evaluate the symptoms, to consider them “Laboratory report” and apply their knowledge.

Maria Vincenzo, a young St. Clairsville student, said the experience was very educational.

“Based on everything we’ve learned, we enter this room like a real situation and we treat the patient like a real life and that’s very strange because having this type of technology is actually real life. Like you’re in. you are working on a real patient. It is very effective. “ he said.

“It’s almost better than real life because you have your teachers here … and they observe you and whatever mistakes you make, now they can fix it. It allows them to. to observe “ Jarrod Heskett, a junior student from St. Claresville, said this was a real part of their study except for the actual clinical work.

“It really prepares you for the future.” Vincenzo said.

“You can definitely see that people, including me – are struggling here because we’re still learning.” Heskett said.

“It’s scary like a real-life clinic, but it definitely prepares us.” Vincenzo said. “You come in and you evaluate him, and if you mess up, that’s fine. It’s just a simulation.”

“It’s very similar to what the hospital system looks like.” Heskett said. “Course teachers, they’re really higher and higher.”

“It’s a great program.” Vincenzo said.
