MARIETTA – Mid-Ohio Valley residents have a chance to learn African drumming on a monthly course at the First Unitarian Universalist Society of Marietta Social Hall.
At Saturday class, participants were able to practice various forms of African rhythmic drumming.
“The funniest part is that the rhythms themselves are fun and I also think there’s something to see people learning to play,” said instructor Lawrence Greene. “While they are playing, I see the whole process of thinking about them. It really opens your mind to more than just another culture. ”
He also said that it helps people put things aside and grow like drummers, and that it becomes much easier as they move forward.
Greene mainly teaches the West African drum rhythm of drumming.
“It’s good for the community because they don’t offer it anywhere else.” said Rev. Kat Hawkaker, a pinion in the church. “It’s been 10 years, but probably three years regularly.”
She attended the class with everyone else present.
Another class participant was Shelley Khatib, a church neighbor.
“My husband met Lawrence and Lawrence mentioned that he was a drummer who told me that, and I contacted Kat and said, ‘Let’s go to some drumming courses,’ and it started.” she said.
Dan Sapp and his son Cody Sapp of Parkersburg attended the class for the first time on Saturday.
He said his son Cody had some mental health problems and considered the drums to be therapeutic.
“That’s why we’re here to give him some positive reinforcement in his life,” Said Dan Sapp.
“She loves drumming. We make the music ourselves, “ he said, adding that Cody likes socializing.
The duo plans to return and attend more classes.
The courses are open to the public and take place the second Saturday of the month from 15:00 to 17:00 at the church, located at 232 3rd St in Marietta.
