A boy died following a shooting at Tanglewood High School in Greenville on Thursday.
At 12:30 p.m., a school resources officer asked for emergency backup after a student was shot, Greenville County Sheriff’s Office said.
The boy was identified as Jamari Cortez Bonaparte Jackson.
Another student was taken into custody, according to Sheriff Hobart Lewis.
Students were taken from school to Simpsonville Church to reunite with their families.
“I spoke with Sheriff Lewis and Head of SLED (Mark) Kill about the shooting at Tanglewood High School,” South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster said Thursday in a Twitter message. “I am grateful to the officers and agents who responded quickly and admirably to a very difficult situation.”

Jamari Jackson was killed in a shooting at Tanglewood Middle
Marshall Jackson, who identified himself as the boy’s grandfather, told The Greenville News that his grandson was shot dead in middle school.
A family spokesman identified him on Friday as Jamari Cortez Bonaparte Jackson.
The 12-year-old boy was shot at least once in the 700th wing of the school, a statement from the sheriff’s office said.
A student in custody, may be charged with murder
A 12-year-old student has been taken into custody away from the Tanglewood Middle campus, according to the sheriff’s office.
The student was taken to the Department of Juvenile Justice in Colombia, and the sheriff’s office plans to file an indictment for murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, possession of a weapon on school property and illegal possession of a weapon by a person under 18 years of age.
Did the students know each other?
According to the sheriff’s office, the students knew each other and the incident was isolated, but the motive for the shooting is still under investigation.
Shifts planned for the Tanglewood victim when the prayers go out are also suspect
A shift was held in front of Tanglewood High School on Thursday evening. Several people met to pray for healing, also for the families of the victim and the suspect.
A second, more formal shift was scheduled for Friday at 8pm at Grace Bible Church on Old Easley Bridge Road.
A press conference on “The Community Implications of Violence in Tanglewood Middle School” was scheduled by the Legal Intervention Initiative and Pastor Paul Guy at 11 a.m. Friday.
A press conference by Put Down the Guns Now Young People and founder Jack Logan scheduled for Friday has been canceled. The organization handed out gun locks near the school Friday morning.
Where is Tanglewood High School?
Tanglewood High School is located on Merriwoods Drive in Greenville, South Carolina, and serves sixth through eighth graders.
814 students were enrolled in the school for the 2021-2022 school year, according to a report to parents and the community.
