Today’s obit: Millacent Lewis, 103, teacher, once taught in a Central NY one-room schoolhouse.

Millacent S. Lewis, 103, of Union Springs, died Jan. 5.

Lewis grew up in Auburn and was a graduate of East High School in Auburn. She obtained a teaching degree from Syracuse City Normal School and went on to graduate from Syracuse University, according to her obituary.

She taught in a private school in Auburn and in a one-room schoolhouse near Fleming. Lewis was subsequently employed in the Union Springs Central School District, mostly teaching kindergarten. She remained there for many years.

She married Roger E. Lewis in 1951 and they were married for 59 years until he died in 2010.

Throughout her life, Lewis gave her time as a volunteer in the community. For many years she was a Red Cross Blood Services liaison in Cayuga County, and only gave it up at age 95 when she stopped driving.

Lewis and her husband volunteered at their local food bank and charitable fund-raisers, including Tomato Fest in Auburn. She belonged to most, if not all, of the committees at her church throughout her long membership.

Lewis also belonged to the Union Springs Literary Club for over 55 years, pursuing informal education and friendships.

A visiting hour will take place from noon to 1 pm on Saturday, Jan. 14 at Trinity United Church of Christ of Union Springs, 163 Cayuga St., Union Springs. This will be followed by a memorial service at 1 pm.

Donations may be made to the Trinity United Church of Christ of Union Springs.
